CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Tara sat at the edge of the bed in her hotel room, her eyes glued to the television. It was now ten. The composite sketch stared back at her from the screen. It was a man in his late forties to early fifties with a scruffy beard, sunken cheeks, and a large forehead that met his prominent brow ridge and made his eyes look sunken in.
âWe ask that if anyone has seen this man in the Boulder area, please call the number on your screen,â the anchor said as a number was displayed in red. Taraâs pulse raced. She couldnât help it. She wanted so badly for this to lead to something. It was the only shot they had right now. She knew that this would inevitably open the door to some false tips. It was always the downside to composite sketchesâsomeone thinking it looks like someone that they know, only to learn that itâs not the same personâbut she hoped that after weeding out all the false tips, there would be a worthy one. And she had to admit it was a good sketch. It had unique characteristics that would certainly set the killer apart from most men.
Taraâs phone rang in the distance, and she leapt from the bed. Please be John, she said to herself. She had called him more times than she could remember, but he still hadnât called her back. She scooped the phone into her hand off her nightstand and relaxed slightly when she saw Johnâs name. She pressed her phone to her ear.
âAre you okay?â she blurted.
âIâm fine.â
Tara waited for him to elaborate, but when he didnât, the anger she had been harboring burst out. âWhat were you thinking?â she asked. âI told you I didnât want you meeting him, and you completely disregarded my feelings.â Pain, worry, and frustration swirled into a fiery haze.
âHe canât keep tormenting you like this, Tara. I canât just sit back and let him do this to you. Iâm going to be your husband. Your battles are my battles. Iâm trying to protect you.â
âBy meeting my alcoholic, violent father at a park in the middle of the night? What good do you think will come from that?â
John didnât answer. It was only confirmation that he knew his actions were reckless.
âI know you want to protect me, but Richard is my father. Itâs up to me how I want to deal with this.â
John sighed. âYouâre right, I shouldnât have tried to meet him. Iâm sorry if I worried you.â Taraâs body relaxed at his words. âBut if he shows up here again, I canât just sit back and do nothing, and you canât expect me to either. Heâs coming to my home too.â
Tara was silent. She hadnât thought of it that way. It wasnât just her door Richard had shown up to. Am I being
