CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Tara sat at the edge of the bed in her hotel room, her eyes glued to the television. It was now ten. The composite sketch stared back at her from the screen. It was a man in his late forties to early fifties with a scruffy beard, sunken cheeks, and a large forehead that met his prominent brow ridge and made his eyes look sunken in.

“We ask that if anyone has seen this man in the Boulder area, please call the number on your screen,” the anchor said as a number was displayed in red. Tara’s pulse raced. She couldn’t help it. She wanted so badly for this to lead to something. It was the only shot they had right now. She knew that this would inevitably open the door to some false tips. It was always the downside to composite sketches—someone thinking it looks like someone that they know, only to learn that it’s not the same person—but she hoped that after weeding out all the false tips, there would be a worthy one. And she had to admit it was a good sketch. It had unique characteristics that would certainly set the killer apart from most men.

“He can’t keep tormenting you like this, Tara. I can’t just sit back and let him do this to you. I’m going to be your husband. Your battles are my battles. I’m trying to protect you.”

“By meeting my alcoholic, violent father at a park in the middle of the night? What good do you think will come from that?”

John didn’t answer. It was only confirmation that he knew his actions were reckless.

“I know you want to protect me, but Richard is my father. It’s up to me how I want to deal with this.”

John sighed. “You’re right, I shouldn’t have tried to meet him. I’m sorry if I worried you.” Tara’s body relaxed at his words. “But if he shows up here again, I can’t just sit back and do nothing, and you can’t expect me to either. He’s coming to my home too.”

Tara was silent. She hadn’t thought of it that way. It wasn’t just her door Richard had shown up to. Am I being
